Probably the biggest and most anticipated fight of this century has been confirmed and announced with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather taking on Manny Pacquiao on 02 May 2015 in Las Vegas. Some might argue that this fight is happening five years too late but as soon as the fight was announced social media went into frenzy and not only boxing fans and experts voice their delight for the fight but also casual fans and celebrities and other sports athlete getting excited for what will be a massive fight come may the second.
Both fighters are not young anymore with Floyd turning 38 in a couple of weeks while Pacquiao is 36 but they still are not only champions but also the top two best pound for pound boxers in the world. So here we take a look at statistical preview and fight predictions.
Mayweather vs Pacquiao Career Record & Statistics:
Both fighters has great career record but Mayweather shades it being unbeaten and always on top of his game for more than a decade in process becoming the greatest PPV star in boxing history. Manny Pacquiao on the other hand has had his fairshare of ups and downs but from 2006 to 2011 he turned up the heat and became the most exciting boxer around, in Mike Tyson words “sensational”

STYLE OF BOXING:
Mayweather is a orthodox style boxer and a tactical genius, he likes to take his time and use precise counter attacks. Its his ability to make himself hard to hit at is what makes him exceptional boxer and his unbeaten record of 47 fights and 47 wins pretty much justify the claim. He will be 38 when he goes into the ring against Pacquiao but he has never been punished badly in fights let alone any knockout, so age does not matter as far as Mayweather is concerned. Mayweather always tend to stick with his frequent jabs and counterpunches strategy in fights.
Manny Pacquiao on the other hand is left handed southpaw style and he is combination of boxer/brawler/swarmer who come at the opposing fighter all the time with constant pressure. He got pretty good power in his punches and sometime get into the slug fest during fights. But he can be beaten as his 5 losses in his record shows. Erik Morales beat him in 2005 and than Timothy Bradley (a controversial decision) and Jaun Manuel Marquez knocked him out cold in 2012. He will be 36 when he takes on Mayweather but unlike his opponent Pacquiao has been showing signs of aging in last few years.
Main Strengths of Both Boxers:
Mayweather is very strong defensively & tacticly, he can adapt to almost any situation. He agile and his reflex are second to none which makes it harder for fighters to hit him clean and combination of his precise jabs and counter punches makes him lethal against Boxers who like to attack.
Pacquiao on the other hand is not only fast but has great footwork and he comes at opponent from different angles with power puncher and explosive speed. But he is short and Mayweather will have a slight advantage of reach. so considering both fighters strenghts we can sum it up as Mayweather has speed and athleticism in his favor while Pacquiao has an advantage in power and combination of punches.
Pacquiao vs Mayweather Predictions:
Both fighters bring in unique styles and skill set and this fight is destined to go all the way 12 rounds and the winner will be decided on points. If there is a knockout it will come from Pacquiao and if fight goes all the way to 12 rounds I cant see Pacquiao winning it. Mayweather is smarter and he times his punches, Pacquiao on the other hand comes with deadly combos and power punches and leaves himself open to counter punches but since Mayweather dont a pose a threat of a knockout but he can keep getting points on counter puches/jabs all night long.
I can see a cautious start to the fight from both fighters but Pacquiao will try to use his explosive hands speed in middle rounds to hurt Mayweather and those rounds will be the key. If Pacquiao can catch Floyd with couple of good shots and get him wobbled (first time in his career) it will be interesting to see how Mayweather bounce back from there but if he keeps Pacquiao chasing him and use his jabs to good use I cant see Mayweather losing this one.
What you think of this mega event ? will Pacquiao be the first fighter to defeat Mayweather ? or will it be Mayweather who will pass his biggest test in process to summit his claim to be “the best ever” ? let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
