When HBO ditched Manny Pacquiao’s next fight in favor of highly talked about title fight between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward it was evident HBO are banking on this to be a major success as PPV. It took almost a year for negoations to finally conclude the the fight was announced in September. Ticket sales have been pretty solid with over 9000 sold in just first week and HBO are hoping PPV can reach good numbers of around 900,000 to 1 million buys.
Kovalev at 33 already don’t have many years left in him and this is his chance to put his name right at the top while Andre Ward’s career has kind of stalled since his amazing Super Six tournament performance several years ago and since than he has been living off tune up fights. Both fights will be getting their career best purse for November bout with purse split is revealed as 60/40 in Kovalev favor.
However money is not the issue in this fight, A win here will get the winner fighter atleast couple of more lucrative PPV fights. Ward’s most recent fight was against Brand where he made around $850,000 from nights work and purse was 96/4 in his favour. However due to his lack of activity in boxing and Kovalev racking in some quality wins in last couple of years has made him the “A side” for this fight.
|Sergey Kovalev||$7 million guaranteed plus undisclosed payment from HBO on per fight contract.|
|Andre Ward||$5 million guaranteed (plus PPV share & sponsorships)|
The fight is schedule to take place on T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas on Saturday, 19th November 2016. It is widely regarded as the biggest fight of the year and will be broadcasted via HBO PPV in the United States while SkySports will have the live coverage for UK viewers on their regular channels (Non-ppv).
