Seventh Edition Twenty20 World Cup will take place in the year 2020 which will be hosted by Australia. ICC announced that T20 world cup will take place every four years after the 2016 world cup in India. Since the start of shorter format world cup in 2007, T20 world cup was taking place every 2 years but ICC has decided to make the interval between world cup to 4 years just like the 50 over tournament.
ICC World Twenty20 2020:
Hosts: Australia will host their first ever Twent20 World Cup in year 2020.
It will be the 7th edition of highly successful 20-over tournament which was first held in South Africa. Australia will be hosting a major T20 international competition for the first time. ICC plan to make next Twenty20 world cup even bigger and better with more associate teams getting a chance to be part of the mega event.
ICC were criticized heavily for reducing the teams in 50-over world cup which will take place in 2019 in England where only top 10 test nations are going to a chance. But ICC announced that they will provide all the opportunities for associate member teams to qualify for the next Twenty20 world cup.
Format & Teams: ICC will revert back to 16 teams tournament which will include quarterfinal stage as well.
2016 World T20 in India had 10 teams in the main draw while Associate teams had to play in provisional round to qualify for the the super 10 stage. But according to reports next T20 world cup will have as many as 16 teams in the main draw divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. Where top 2 teams from each group will make it to the quarter final stage.
- Qualifying: 14 team qualifying tournament will take place in 2019 where 6 teams will join the 10 full members in the main event.
The last T20 world cup in India was bit off a turnoff as only Afghanistan could manage to qualify for the final draw leaving out the likes of Ireland and Zimbabwe. ICC are eager to avoid such a scenario and a simple qualifying tournament will take place where around 14 associate teams will take part an 6 will qualify for the main draw.
