After a difficult december and a underwhelming start to new year, Arsenal visited Deepdale as they took Preston North End in the FA Cup third round tie on Saturday and they started on a back foot yet again going behind thanks to a goal from Callum Robinson in just 7th minute of the game. Arsenal failed to produce their usual standard of football but they did got back in the game after the break when Aaron Ramsey scored just after the half time to make it 1-1.
Preston North End 1-1 Arsenal Highlights
[ Emirates FA Cup 2017 – 3rd Round Tie ]
07′ 1 – 0 Callum Robinson opened the scoring for homeside inside first 7 minutes and Arsenal were left shellshocked.
46′ 1 – 1 Aaron Ramsey brought Arsenal back into the game just after the half time to make it 1-1.
89′ 1 – 2 Olivier Giroud
Wenger do have some selection head going into the game but we can expect the likes of Giroud, Iwobi, Theo Walcott Elnany, Chambers, Oxlaid-Chamberlain to start with Sanchez and Ozil given a rest after a very busy festive period. On paper Arsenal should sail through this tie but Preston playing at home can pull off a shock result.
Last time these two meet was back in 1999 when Arsenal secured a 4-2 win having gone 2-0 down in first half. Emmanuel Petit and Overmars were on target as Arsenal completed a famous comeback.
Team News & Lineups: Wenger will be confident after Arsenal’s incredible turnaround against Bournemouth in midweek where they came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 and salvage a very important point in the top 4 race. Preston are a decent side who are languishing 11th in the championship but they do have players who can hurt Arsenal on a bad day for gunners.
Preston will be without Jermaine Beckford who is ruled out for this game which means Anders Lindegaard should start in his place while the likes of Andy Boyle and Daryl Horgan are expected to start. As far as Arsenal are concerned this game might mark the return of Danny Welbeck while Lucas Perez is expected to start upfront. This is how I expect both teams to lineup on Saturday evening.
Predictions: Arsenal’s form has been wobbly for over a month now and if you expect a straight forward win for Arsenal in this one you are in for a shock. I am expecting Preston to frustrate Arsenal throughout the night and make a game of it. However I am still going with a narrow win for Arsenal in this one.
