England took on Russia in the first European championship match in the Group C and they ran out comfortable winners although score card does not suggest the similar story. England started with Rooney, Kane and Sterling upfront with packed midfield and dominated the game most part. It took deep in second half for England to finally break the deadlock when Eric Dier scored to put England 1-0 up but a late goal from Denis Glushakov earned a point for Russia.
England registered their first win of the tournament when they came out 1-0 winners against Russia on Saturday night. It took 73rd minute to break the deadlock and it was Eric Dier who scored with a beautiful curling free kick to earn three points for England.
England 1-1 Russia Highlights
[ UEFA European Championship 2016 ]
73′ 1 – 0 Eric Dier scored in 73rd minute to put England 1-0 up with a stunning freekick.
90′ 1 – 1 Denis Glushakov scored late in injury time to equalize for Russia.
Roy Hodgson has picked several young stars and that made this england squad the youngest of the 24 teams taking part in 2016 European championships. England has come along way since their defeat in Euro 2012 in the hands of Italy on penalties. Although three lions don’t have good memories of playing against Russia who always give tough time to England national team. Three lions has not lost in 90 or 120 minutes of play in any of the last 22 European competitive fixtures including qualifying rounds. Their last defeat in normal play came back in 2007 when Croatia won 3-2 to eliminate them from 2008 Euro.
Team News & Lineups: There is alot of buzz around English camp whether Jamie Vardy will start upfront with Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney but according to recent reports in english media Hodgson is expected to leave ou Vardy from the starting lineup in the first game with Rahim Sterling replacing him.
Russia on the other hand had massive issue with injury worries leading to big tournament, two key players in Alan Dzagoev and Igor Denisov has been ruled out which means Artur Yusupov got a call up for national squad. This is how i expect both teams to lineup on Saturday, 10th June.
Match Predictions: Looking at the past records between the two this promise to be a very competitive fixture. Russia are missing couple of their key men which will effect the team while England are still seem to ensure of their best starting lineup. A win for either side in this game will put them on pole position to qualify from this group. I am going with a 2-1 win for England in this one with Vardy coming on as a sub to score the winner.
