Manchester United hosted Belgian side Anderlecht in the UEFA Europa League 2017 second leg of their quarterfinal tie at Old Trafford and it turned out to be a similar game like the first leg where United took the lead through Henrik Mikhitaryan in just 10th minute but Anderlecht found their way back into the game thanks to goal from Hanni Sofiane. The game was 1-1 late in second half and United needed a goal to get through.
Manchester United 1-1 Anderlecht Highlights
[ Europa League 2017 Quarterfinal – 2nd Leg ]
10′ 1 – 0 Henrik Mkhitaryan scores in just 10th minute of the game his 5th of Europa League campaign to put United in lead.
32′ 1 – 1 Sofiane Hanni equalized on a rebound after United failed to clear and Hanni took advantage of mix up and slotted home to get Anderlecht back in the tie.
On paper United should sail through to the semifinals but this Anderlecht side are one tough cookie who are coming into the quarterfinal tie against United on the back of beating Apoel Nicosia 1-0 in both legs. United on the other hand have a better squad but they are not playing the cutting edge football and rely heavily on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goals.
United will need to get atleast and away goal and not get beat convincingly which will put them in decent position to win the second leg at home. However if they can get a positive result they will have every chance of getting through to the next round. Anderlecht on the other hand must win first leg and preferably not concede at home which will give them oppertunity to sit back and hit United on counter attacks in second leg. Its an intriguing matchup however if we take a look at the history, these two last meet in 2000-01 champions league group stage where United beat Anderlecht 5-1 at home but lost 2-1 in Belgium.
Match Predictions: This is a tricky fixture for United but looking at their season results its evident United are a better cup competition team than their League form where they have been wobbling since the start of the season. I am going with a 1-1 draw in first leg but United to go through convincingly in second leg.
