Conor McGregor made history by defeating Jose Aldo with quickest ever knockout out in UFC title fight history. McGregor caught Aldo with a thumping left knocking him out cold and register the win making him UFC Featherweight world champion. But what are his next possible opponents and fights available for him ?
McGregor is a top draw in UFC right now as the numbers suggest on saturday night that UFC recorded their highest gate reciept with over $10 million while the PPV earnings are also believed to be record breaking with over 1 million PPV sold making it the biggest UFC night in history. So keeping all these things in mind what possible route McGregor will take moving forward ?. Well he discussed the possible fights and scenarios in the post fight interview. Currently he has three options.
- Rematch with Jose Aldo (highly unlikely after 13 second knockout because its a hard sell)
- A fight against Frankie Edgar (former lightweight champions)
- Vacate Featherweight title and move to 155lb and go for the UFC Lightweight Championship.
But Conor McGregor insisted that he has no intentions of vacating featherweight championship even if he becomes Lightweight champion as he wants to hold title in two different class. We can safely assume that Dana White and UFC will protect Conor McGregor as he is the new poster boy for the sport and has so much following which is only going to increase after Aldo knockout.
Looking at the next possible opponents Frankie Edgar makes alot of sense both financially and risk wise. UFC can not afford McGregor to lose now and they will only get him the ring against the fighters who posses less risk. They way McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo was so unreal to believe and it does not tell much how the fight would have gone if Aldo did not get caught so early. Aldo reiterate that he wants the immediate rematch but finance wise it might not be a good Idea after 13 second knock out fans will be hesitant to pay for a rematch against a fighter who already got knockout cold.
Frankie Edgar just defeated Chad Mendes on friday night and that kind of put him right up there as the next potential opponent for McGregor to setup a UFC lightweight championship fight later in 2016 or early 2017. Frankie Edgar has already expressed his desire to fight McGregor in New York.
