This will be the biggest fight of the year even eclipsing Joshua vs Povetkin which takes place a week later. Both fighters are set to earn their biggest purse with Canelo Alvarez guaranteed $15 million and could clear upto $25 million depending on PPV numbers. Golovkin on the other hand will also get his biggest career payday and should clear anywhere between $10 to $15 million. We take a look at all the financial aspects heading to the big fight.
Canelo vs Golovkin Purse: Canelo Alvarez is widely regarded as the biggest name in boxing after Mayweather and Pacquiao and his PPV numbers has been impressive even with some underwhelming fights in recent years.
Canelo-Golovkin first fight which ended in a very competitive draw was one of the biggest in terms of revenue. It did just under 1.3 million in PPV sales and generating around $27,059,850 in live gate receipts. Canelo cleared over $30 million from the fight while Golovkin pocketed around $22 million. Career best purse for both fighters who will be hoping to at least match the numbers in the highly anticipated rematch set to take place exactly a year after their first bout on Saturday, 15th September 2018.
Canelo vs Golovkin Rematch Purse: Both fighters are guaranteed atleast $15 million plus their respective share of PPV revenue and their personal sponsorship deals. Canelo has a massive deal with HBO in the US and Azteca in Mexico and combine that with some lucrative sponsorship deals he will pocket another $25 to $30 million from rematch. However, if it was not for drug test issues he will be making more than that from many lost sponsorship deals.
Canelo Alvarez is a bonafide PPV star both in native Mexico and the US and his last major fight was against Golovkin back in September 2017 where it did around 1.3 million PPV buys. Before that his fight against Miguel Cotto back in 2015 where Canelo-Cotto did just over 900,000 ppv buys bringing in $58 million revenue from US TV. Golden boy and HBO are hoping to do the same numbers as first fight where it brought in $100 million in revenue.
T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is set to host the fight and 20,000 capacity arena should bring in $20 to $25 million in gate receipts. So with US PPV, international broadcasting deals, closed circuit TV and gate receipts fight should bring in around $150 million in total revenue.
So how much Canelo and Golovkin can clear from this fight ? Asuming fight do around 1.3 million ppv buys that will bring in around $100 million. Fighters get around 60% of the PPV revenue so thats $60 million to be shared between the two fighters. Canelo Alvarez is “A” side with 60/40 split. So thats pretty much secure both fighters their biggest career purse with Canelo clearing over $35 million while Golovkin taking home around $24 million from this fight.
|Canelo Alvarez||$36 million (Canelo Alvarez will be a getting a guaranteed cheque of $15 million the morning after the fight. But he is expected to clear minimum of $35 million in total with his tier based PPV contract depending on the ppv numbers. Another $3-$5 million from both US and Mexico sponsorship deals making it his biggest payday of around $40 million)|
|Gennady Golovkin||$24 million (Guaranteed $15 million but just like Canelo he will also get share of PPV revenue pie and depending on numbers he should also clear over $20 million easy)|
Will it be biggest payday for both fighters ? Most definitely. Canelo Alvarez has made good money in previous fights including against Mayweather, Cotto, Khan and Chavez Jr but this one against Golovkin is on a different level.
