Manchester United has officially unveiled Paul Pogba for a record breaking 100 million transfer just before the start of 2016-17 premier league season. United has yet to sell any major player and they have brought in 4 quality signings. Now they have less than 20 days to drop some of the dead wood and Mourinho must do it not to spoil the atmosphere with the squad. How United will lineup with their full strength is remain to be seen. Pogba is not you conventional central midfielder, he is better with more attacking responsibility and less defending which leaves Mourinho will several dillema as far as his starting lineup is concerned. General consensuses around United is that Mourinho is no fool, he must have some plan built around Pogba to push for this transfer so much.
Looking at the available squad there are several ways Mourinho can lineup his United week and week out. In the pre-season he has used his favourite 4-2-3-1 with Rooney, Martial, Lingard/Mata playing in attacking roles behind Ibrahimovic. While Herrera, Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin playing in central midfield roles. Where do Pogba fit in this system ? Well Pogba did play in deeper midfield roles for France in Euros but he was not as effective as he has been with Juventus in left sided midfield role in 4-3-3 for best part of last season.
Pogba has not peaked yet and he has yet to learn the trade as far as central midfield roles are concerned but Mourinho is expected to play him in deeper role specially at the start of the season as he try to fit Rooney and Ibrahimovic in his starting lineup. If Mourinho were to use 4-2-3-1 formation Pogba might start alongside Carrick or Morgan Schneiderlin in central midfield just as City did with Yaya Toure. If Rooney and Ibrahimovic duo put together some good performances Mourinho might stick with this system but if in the first couple of premier league games Rooney and Ibra failed to linkup Mourinho might sacrifice either Rooney or Ibra to accommodate Pogba in no.10 role.
Mourinho knows it that handling this squad will need a delicate touch. United fans expect Martial and Rashford to play regularly while Rooney and Ibrahimovic playing together might slow the team down in final third. Pogba is better while attacking and can score goals while there is straight competition for place in starting lineup between new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata or even Jese Lingard. So Mourinho has couple of other options to utilize this squad to its full potential.
