English Premier League as we know it today was the result of re-branding of the old “English first division” which was established back in 1888. Preston North End won the first two titles in 1889 and 1890. English league structure was redevised with division 2 and lower leagues in 1892 and that was the time when it fully became professional sport all around England. We take a look at all the English division one champions since its inception to date.
Teams with most first division titles ? Aston Villa was the pioneer club to help establish the league and they dominated first decade of the league winning 5 titles from 1893 to 1900.
In 128 years history only 23 teams have ever won the English top division title and 19 teams has won the title more than once with Manchester United leading the way with 20 while Liverpool has won it 18 times followed by Arsenal who has won the league 13 times.
Liverpool dominated the english football in 1970s and 1980s taking their total premier league title tally to record 18. But after 1992 when league was re-branded as English Premier League, Manchester United dominated under Sir Alex Ferguson and won 13 titles under his supervision from 1992 to 2013 and ultimately became the most successful team in English football with 20 top flight titles to their name. Leicester City can make history if they can win the premier league title in 2015-16 season. They will become the 24th team ever to win the top division league title having previously finished as runnersup twice.
Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Huddersfield Town are the only teams to have won the title in three consecutive seasons. United achieve this twice in 1999-2001 and 2007-2009.
