In the Group C game of European Championship 2016 Germany took on Ukraine on Sunday night and just like all the earlier games in the tournament it proved to be another competitive game. Germans dominated possession while Ukraine looked dangerous on counter attacks. It took 20 minutes for Germany to open the scoring when Valencia defender Mustafi scored to make it 1-0. Ukraine had a few chances of their own but Germany dominated second half, missed a few easy chances to kill the game off but Ukraine never looked like scoring. Schweinsteiger came on as a late substitute and found himself on the scoresheet was a brilliant counter attack by Germany lead to Ozil putting the ball on plate for Schweinsteiger who scored from close range.
It took just 20 minute for Germany to take the lead albiet in controversial circumstances when Thomas Muller was given a dubious freekick which resulted in Mustafi heading past Ukrainian keeper to make it 1-0. However the game was far from over as Ukraine had their fair share of chances.
Germany 2-0 Ukraine Highlights
[ UEFA European Championship 2016 ]
19′ 1 – 0 Shkodran Mustafi scored in 19th minute to give World Champions the lead as they dominated possession afterwards.
90′ 2 – 0 Bastian Schweinsteiger scored late in injury time to seal a comfortable win.
Preview & Team News: Germany has lost three of the last 5 friendly games leading up to the big event and Joachim Löw has made couple of surprising decision as far as German squad is concerned. Marco Reus has been left out of the squad with fears of persistent injuries while Matts Hummel is struggling for fitness but made the cut in final 23. Ukraine on the other hand won all four of their friendly games leading to Euros and their national team coach Mykhaylo Fomenko is confident of getting out of this group C.
Germany lacks a out and out striker but in Thomas Muller they have a player who is versatile and always come up triumph in the major tournaments. Germany is expected to start with Mario Gomez upfront with Ozil, Draxler and Muller playing in attacking roles behind the big center forward. Bastian Schweinsteiger is still struggling for fitness which means Kroose and Khadira set to start in central midfield roles.
Ukraine on the other hand dont have much of injury worries and they will start with Zozulya upfront while Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko set to start in advance attacking roles with Sydorchuk, Rybalka and Stepaneko in midfield. This is how I expect both teams to lineup on Saturday.
Match Predictions: This is one game where Germans might get caught as Ukraine comes into this game full of confidence. Mario Gomez is a decent striker upfront but he is not agile enough for this Germany side. I feel like Germany will dominate the possession but Ukraine will defend deep and try to counter with pace of Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko. I am going with a surprise win for Ukraine in this one.
