Newly promoted Newcastle United side are set to take on Tottenham Hotspurs in their opening Premier League game of 2017-18 season at St James Park in Newcastle United. The game will be played on Sunday, 13th August 2017 and will be part of Sunday’s double header starting at around 13:30 uk time. It will be the first league game for Newcastle United since getting promotion from Championship and they will be eager to go against the odds and get something from this game against Spurs.
Under Rafael Benitez Newcastle got promotion after superb season in Championship and a lot was expected of the team and fans expected a few new signings to take them to next level this summer. However Mike Ashley has failed to deliver any meaningful transfer which has left a bad taste both with the fans and manager. Benitez is apperently looking for a way out of the club after helping them get back to premier league if Mike Ashley won’t release funds from new signings.
Spurs on the other hand also going through similar situation after two superb season’s finishing 3rd and 2nd respectively in 2016 and 2017, Spurs fans were hoping for couple of big name signings but none arrived and Tottenham might take the field against Newcastle United pretty much unchanged from last season. So its interesting match up where Spurs will go into the game huge favourites.
Team News & Possible Lineups: Spurs are set to start with their preferred 4-2-3-1 formation where Harry Kane to lead the line while Erikson, Alli and Sissoko to take attacking midfield roles. Dembele and Harry Winks to start in denfensive midfield roles. This is how I expect both teams to lineup on Sunday.
Newcastle United to start with Gayle upfront with Perez, Ritchie and Atsu starting in advance midfield roles. Merino and Shelvey to play in central midfield roles.
Predictions: Hard to see Newcastle getting anything from this game considering Spurs have been the best team in premier league over the last two years. However lack of signings in the summer and some unrest among spurs squad regarding salaries might start to play its role. Newcastle playing at home can always produce surprise results but looking at their possible starting lineup I can’t see anyone who could really trouble Spurs defense. I am going with a comfortable 3-1 win for Tottenham in this one.
