Cristiano Ronaldo leads champions league all-time goal scoring chart with 95 strikes to his name closely followed by Messi who has 93 goals after he grabbed another against Monchengladbach. Raul’s haul of 71 strikes in his long illustrious career keep him behind Messi and Ronaldo.
Update: Lionel Messi has closed the gap to Ronaldo’s 95 goal haul in champions league and now trails by only 2 goals after scoring yet another goal on Matchday6 of Champions League (06 December 2016). Messi has scored 10 goals in this season’s Champions League and at this rate he might just cross Ronaldo by the end of the season.
|4||Ruud Van Nistelrooy||56||73||0.77|
|6||Alfredo Di Stéfano||49||58||0.84|
|13||Alessandro Del Piero||41||89||0.46|
The list contains some of the greatest goal scorers in history with the likes of Alfredo Di Stefno, Puskas and Gerd Muller. They might have scored alot more games if than european cup also featured group matches. Unfortunately in those times European Cup (now known as Champions League) only featured knockout home & away ties from the round 1. So those players played far less games than they could have in modern era.
Most of the top 10 players in the list were out and out centre forwards like Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Raul and Henry but Lionel Messi and Ronaldo both started their careers playing in attacking midfield roles and them to top this list shows how great these two are in terms of scoring goals at the highest stage of them all.
In terms of goal-to-game ratio Germany’s Gerd Muller leads the way with 1.00 while Ferenc Puskás and Stefno also has healthy .88 and .87 ratios. Ruud Van Nistelrooy was another striker who scored freely in last decade notching up 3 yearly top goal scorers awards. But to sum it up we have to agree that Ronaldo and Messi are the two greatest goal scorers in UEFA Champions League history.
