Barcelona has finally extended their kit deal with long-term suppliers “Nike” for the period of next 10 years as both parties announced the 10 year extension which include massive financially improved clauses making it the biggest kit deal not only in football but sports in general. Although both Barcelona and Nike did not disclosed the financial terms but according to various sources both in Spain and UK, the new kit deal is worth a massive €155 million a year (£120m). which blows away Manchester United’s record deal with Adidas worth £75m a year.
Barcelona and Nike announced the kit deal last week after long hard negotiations which lasted well over three months and both parties seem to be happy with the deal. It is a tier based contract where Barcelona will be paid £100 million guaranteed in first two years of the deal while Barcelona also managed to get the licensing of its own stores which was with Barcelona in the previous 10 year deal.
Barcelona’s current deal with Nike was signed back in 2008 for a period of 10 years and the contract was worth around £28 million a year. The new record breaking deal will be activities at the start of 2018-19 season and will last till 2027-28 season. Barcelona also recover the licensing of any product other than team official jersey/training apparel. Below are the details of new contract.
CONTRACT PERIOD | YEARLY GUARANTEED | PERFORMANCE RELATED BONUSES |
10 year (2018-2028) | €105 million (Euro) | Max £50 million a year depending on the season results in Champions league and La Liga |
Barcelona’s new kit deal with Nike makes it the biggest in football beating off Manchester United’s Adidas deal signed back in 2014 which is worth over £75 million a year. Real Madrid’s current deal with Adidas last till 2020 and brings £34 million a year but Real Madrid are apparently putting pressure on Adidas to sign financially improved contract extension while Adidas are resisting to hold on for another few years before they sign another extension. But we might see a Chelsea-Adidas like scenario where Real Madrid might buy out the remainder of the contract if they can get better deal with Nike.
