Quite recently we posted an article about 10 of them most popular sports played around the world and surprisingly Olympics sports like Swimming, Athletics and cycling were on the top but looking at the team sport Football was by far the most popular and played sport on different levels around the world. While Rugby and Cricket has been stuck in some familiar countries and finding it hard to get itself globalized. In 2015 we will have both Cricket and Rugby Union world cups and its the best time to know which of these two sports is the most watched with FIFA World Cup 2014 setting the benchmark.
Cricket World Cup 2015 – Rugby World Cup 2015 TV Figures:
According to some varied statistics, the upcoming cricket world tournament will be the world’s third largest (only football world cup and summer olympics exceeding), set to be broadcasted in over 200 countries to over 2.2 billion viewers. So if the claim were to be true it means Rugby World Cup will have less exposure than cricket world cup this year but looking at the rugby world cup 2011 figures where RWC2011 managed a cumulative audience of 2.5 billion tune in to follow New Zealand winning the world cup 2011, has already set the record straight compared to Cricket world cup 2011 in india.
But International Cricket Council has struck out huge broadcasting deals around the world for World Cup 2015 and they believe that CWC2015 will be televised in more than 200 countries around the world fetching more than 2.2 billion viewers atleast. But the same goes to upcoming Rugby World Cup which will take place in England and Wales and although 8 months away the anticipation level is already huge in rugby nations. So we are going to take a look at 10 of the most watched sporting events in last decade (excluding individual sports like tennis, boxing and Olympics)
TOURNAMENT | ESTIMATED TOTAL VIEWS | MOST WATCHED MATCH
FIFA World Cup 2014 | 3.9 billion | 700 million (The Final)
Rugby World Cup 2011 | 2.4 billion | 81.6 million (The FInal)
Cricket World Cup 2011 | 2.2 billion | 67.6 million (Pakistan vs India) |
According to recent statistics both Cricket and Rugby World Cups are set to break records of previous world cup viewing figures which goes to show how much the tv broadcasting has enabled fans around the world to get hold of their favorite sport.
Well technichally Cricket World Cup and Rugby World Cup are not the 2nd and 3rd most watched events there is huge list of other sports, some of them american sports like Super Bowl, World Series Baseball and the unprecedented Summer Olympics and event winter Olympics draw more viewers. We did not touch those sports statistics for a few reason first the american sports are not that popular outside USA so we can not call them global sports while Olympics mostly feature individual sports just as Tennis and boxing etc.
having said that Formula 1 is another most watched sport in the world which generated around 500 million viewers in 2014 but that is way off the mark compared to global events like Rugby and Cricket World Cup.
