2015-16 Season: Manchester were top of the table after 7 games with 16 points at the end September 2015. But after that everything started to fell apart when they had to play two games a week in Premier League and Champions League. Pressure got to players and they could only win 2 games in all competition from 21st October to 28 december.
Manchester United losses in premier league this season.
Only that 3-0 defeat at Emirates against Arsenal came against potential top four rivals apart from that United has lost against teams they are normally expected to beat.
- Swansea City (lost 2-1 away)
- Arsenal (lost 3-0 away)
- Bournemouth (lost 2-1 away)
- Norwich (Lost 2-1 home)
- Stoke City (lost 2-0 away)
- Southampton (lost 1-0 home)
- Sunderland (Lost 2-1 away)
- West Brom (Lost 2-1 away)
Points Won vs Traditional Big 6: Now now if we take a look at United’s 14 wins this season those include victories against Liverpool (2), Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham, West Ham, Everton, Southampton. Its hard to get your head around it why United are struggling to beat bottom teams while boosting the best record in premier league against top 6 teams.
United has taken 18 points off traditional top 6 teams in the league while Liverpool comes second with only 12, Spurs and Arsenal has taken 10. So Van Gaal don’t have much of a problem beating top teams in premier league.
Points won against this season top 6 teams: Even if we consider result against the top 6 teams this season United have done fairly well and lost only against Arsenal.
Last season 2014-15 when Louis Van Gaal took over as Manchester United manager he managed to get United into fourth place after quite a few ups and downs throughout the season. His record against top 6 teams in the league was excellent with a superb win ratio of 65.7%.
So basically Van Gaal has played 18 matches against top 6 teams in premier league and won incredible 35 points since August 2014. Now if you compare this to David Moyes 1 year in charage who only won once against a top 6 teams. It goes to show how far United has come under Van Gaal.
Now United sit 1 point behind City and 5 behind Arsenal in the top 4 race with only 8 more games to play and if they do qualify for Champions League the season will be a success but it won’t guarantee Van Gaal will be at the club next season. Personally I would keep him for another year If he qualify for Champions League just for the sake of stability and how he brought in number of youngsters in the team.
