Stan Wawrinka has defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of 2016 US Open to win his third grand slam. Djokovic won the first set but a foot injury kind of slowed him down and from than it was only one winner as Wawrinka won the next three sets.
Novak Djokovic was quick of the blocks winning the first set 7-6 but Wawrinka came back stronger and dominated afterwards winning three straight sets winning his first US open title. An apperent foot injury to Djokovic helped, but credit where credit is due, Wawrinka had amazing grand slam and had to dig deep in third round when he saved the match point and went on to win the US Opne.
World number 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic has made it through to the US Open final and he will be hunting his third US title and 13th overall when he takes on Swiss player Stan Wawrinka in the final of mens singles US Open final this Sunday, 11 September 2016. Its a massive final specially for Wawrinka who will be hoping to win his third grand slam while Djokovic can get closer to Federer’s all-time grand slam record with a win here.
As far as the head to head record is concerned of the two players, Djokovic has the upper hand with 83% win ratio against Wawrinka’s only 17%. Having said that, only time these two meet in the grand slam final was back in 2015 French Open and Wawrinka came on top. Its all setup for a grand final where Djokovic will go into the game as slightly favourite having had so many few sets than Wawrinka so far in the tournament.
Stan Wawrinka has been pretty solid so far in the US Open and he got the better of Kei Nishikori in the semifinal after losing the first set but came back stronger and won three back to back sets winning the semifinal and reaching yet final where he will face none other than world#1 Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic has won both of their encounters in US Open which occured back in 2012 and 2013 when straight set win in Round of 16 and the epic 2013 semifinal which lasted over 4 hours. We can expect a similar match where Djokovic is likely to start stronger but if Wawrinka can take him past the 3rd set he will be slightly favourite having already played long matches.
